The program was called UTTAS (Utility Tactical Transport Air System), and it specified the following requirements: a crew of three, transportation of 11-15 soldiers in the cockpit, a power plant with two engines, and the ability to transport the helicopter itself inside transport aircraft. Of the nine companies that submitted designs for the UTTAS helicopter, the U.S. Department of Defense selected two - Boeing-Vertol and Sikorsky.
